NCTM/NCSM 2023 Washington, DC Sessions

NCTM/NCSM 2023 Washington, DC Sessions

Join me at the following sessions during the upcoming National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM) annual conferences in October in Washington DC.

National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM)

Saturday, Oct. 28 8:00-9:00am

Location: DC Convention Center, 150A

Session Title: Deepening Number Sense through Stories: The Power of Context to Expand Students’ Thinking K-2

Launching lessons with a story context is powerful and engaging! Join me to explore story-related math experiences that deepen students’ number sense. Discover a wealth of children’s books that set a context for lessons ranging from counting to place value and gather ideas for rich math tasks that challenge students to think deeply about numbers.

I promise I will make it worth your while to get up early Saturday morning!!!

National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM)

Sunday, Oct. 29 – 1:15-2:15pm

Location: Anacostia E

Session Title: Teaching Through Investigations to Empower Students and Build Identity and Agency

Imagine elementary mathematics classrooms that nurture curiosity, challenge students to make sense of mathematical concepts, and empower students to see themselves as competent mathematicians. How might bold math leaders transform instructional practice to empower students to be at the center of their own learning? Explore ways to elevate instruction through simple investigations, student-created models, deep questions, and meaningful contexts resulting in a deep understanding of the mathematics and positive, active, and confident learners.

I will also be doing two sessions for Hand2mind to introduce teachers and math supervisors to my new product, Navigating Numeracy (center kits built on learning progressions). Join me at one of these sessions to explore numeracy practice options and find out more about Navigating Numeracy.

National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM)

Friday, Oct. 27 – 9:30 – 10:30am (CC, room 156)

Session Title: Progressing Towards Proficiency: Fostering Early Numeracy Skills with Learning Progressions and Hands-On Math Centers

Join us to explore the concept of leveraging a learning progression model to guide the development and reinforcement of numeracy skills in math centers. Explore tailored learning experiences that develop and reinforce early numeracy skills. See how shifting the focus to what students can do, allows us to build on prior knowledge and pave the path to mastery. Experience the impact of meaningful and purposeful tasks that empower students to actively participate in their mathematical journey.  Leave this session inspired with practical strategies to design impactful, differentiated, engaging math centers!

National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM)

Sunday, Oct. 29  – 8:15 – 9:15am (Room 9)

Session Title: Harnessing the Power of Learning Progressions and Hands-On Math Centers to Foster Early Numeracy Skills

Join us for an engaging session that will share strategies for designing powerful math centers in K-5 classrooms in your school/district. Discover the power of a 3-part learning progression model that helps students build and master math topics with confidence. Experience the impact of meaningful and purposeful tasks that empower students to actively participate in their mathematical journey. Explore ways to support teachers in the development of centers and discuss ways to enhance teachers’ understanding of numeracy through attention to learning progressions.
