NCTM Spring Conference – Kansas City – Feb. 6-7, 2025

Sue will be presenting two sessions at the conference, one for grades K-2 teachers/math coaches and one for grades 3-5 teachers/math coaches. Both will explore fun ways to engage students in deepening their math understanding through simple investigation, stories, hands-on tasks, and lots of math talk! She will be sharing some of her favorite lessons and resources.
For grades 3-5:
Thursday, Feb. 6; 8:00 – 9:15 am; room 3501 G
Math Through Stories: Using Literature to Spark Hands-On Math Investigations in Grades 3-5
In what ways might exploring mathematics through a story context help grades 3-5 students make sense of abstract math ideas? Explore how children’s literature can provide a perfect context to launch hands-on math investigations that bring meaning to math concepts and prompt mathematical thinking. Walk away with recommended titles, a format for designing engaging math tasks that support learning for all students, and ideas for interactive and hands-on math tasks. This is a hands-on workshop session!
For grades K-2:
Thursday Feb. 6; 1:00-2:00pm; Room 2215 A/B
Teaching Through Investigations: Empowering Students to Be Confident and Competent Mathematicians
Imagine K-2 classrooms that nurture curiosity, challenge students to make sense of mathematical concepts, and empower students to see themselves as competent mathematicians. Explore ways to prompt students’ insights with investigations filled with student-created models, deep questions, and meaningful story contexts. Explore practice tasks that nudge students to examine, explore, and discuss their understandings as they develop skills. Discover the power of teaching through investigations!
